Conference for the 60th Anniversary of Tianjin University of Science & Technology Held

    During the past 60 years since its founding, Tianjin University of Science & Technology (TUST) has nurtured numerous talents. On September 21, TUST celebrated its 60th anniversary. The 60-year-old Binhai Campus was well-decorated and exuded vigor and vitality in each corner. In the morning, the 60th anniversary of TUST was held in the stadium of Binhai Campus. Guests from all circles of society, representatives of teachers and students, and schoolfellows from home and abroad gathered together to witness the glorious moment.

    Leaders attending the conference included: Zhang Chonghe, Chairman of China Light Industry Council, Xu Wenying, Vice Chairman of China National Textile and Apparel Council, Qian Guijing, former Vice Chairman of China Light Industry Council and a schoolfellow of TUST, Chen Kefu, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a schoolfellow of TUST, Sun Baoguo, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Beijing Technology and Business University, Tian Huiguang, former Vice Chairman of Tianjin Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and a schoolfellow of TUST, Luan Jianzhang, Director of the Research Office of International Department of the Central Committee of CPC and a schoolfellow of TUST, Wang Minyan, Inspector of Deputy Director Level of Consumer Goods Industry Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and a schoolfellow of TUST, Li Yuenan, Deputy Director-General of Education Department of Hainan Province, Zhang Guansheng, former President (Director) of TUST, Zhang Wenjiang, former Secretary of the Party Committee of TUST, Tan Guomin, former Secretary of the Party Committee of TUST, Zhu Baozhong, former Secretary of the Party Committee of TUST, Li Cailiang, a member and Secretary-General of the Standing Committee of Binhai New Area Committee of Tianjin and a schoolfellow of TUST, Li Lijun, Deputy Head of Hexi District of Tianjin and a schoolfellow of TUST, Yu Mei, Deputy Director of the Administrative Committee of Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area, Zhang Yue, Deputy Director of the Administrative Committee of Binhai Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park of Tianjin, and others.

    Cao Xiaohong, former President of TUST, Wei Dapeng, former Secretary of the Party Committee of TUST, and Li Xuyan, former Secretary of the Party Committee of TUST, all extended their congratulations through various means. Leaders of TUST, such as Han Jinyu, Xia Jingbo, Zhang Aihua, Li Zhanyong, and Xing Jun, attended the conference. Some former leaders of TUST also attended the conference, such as Yang Shuhui, Chang Ruxiang, Fu Yucheng, Pan Xiushan, Wang Xuekui, and Yan Xueyuan. Xia Jingbo, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of TUST, presided over the conference.

The conference kicked off amid solemn national anthem. Han Jinyu, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of TUST, extended welcome to all guests, and expressed heartfelt thanks to teachers, students, staff, and all circles of the society for their contributions to the construction and development of TUST over the years. He said that during the past 60 years, TUST has remained true to its original aspiration and been committed to light industry, and worked to expand the bounds of scholarship. TUST has kept re-adjusting discipline layout and engaged in the research of major issues, thus scoring a batch of significant innovation results. During the past six decades, TUST has made meticulous efforts to train industrial professionals, nurturing around 130 thousand outstanding graduates and schoolfellows. Among which, there are cohorts of academic elites, industrial leaders, and capable people to administer the state, who have contributed to national prosperity and rejuvenation. During the 60 years, TUST has showed great concern to the people, and worked to improve people’s livelihood. As such, a multi-layered, wide-ranging, omnibearing linkage mechanism that serves Tianjin and even the whole country has been shaped.

Han Jinyu said that “bringing out the full potential for development of higher education” has become a theme of education in the new era. TUST has responded to the trend and proposed such an objective: building itself into a multi-disciplinary teaching and research university with great influence at home and first-rate distinctive disciplines by 2020; growing into a first-rate university among domestic peers and a high-end distinctive university with global influence by 2058, namely the 100th anniversary. In the future, TUST will further enhance development confidence and continue to value virtue and nurture talents. It will renew its efforts to follow an open approach, and enhance its reputation by training outstanding graduates. It will embrace a distinctive development path with an open mind and strong determination. The objective is to open up new prospects for its own development and contribute more to higher education of the state and the efforts of building Tianjin into a modern metropolis.

    Chen Kefu, the representative of schoolfellows of TUST and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, reviewed the history of TUST: how a college of light industry grew into a university and how the university was relocated to the coastal area. In his words, audience can feel his strong attachment and gratitude to the alma mater. He expressed his affectionate blessing to the 60th anniversary of his alma mater on behalf of all schoolfellows, and wished TUST to stay true to its original aspiration and nurture more talents for the great cause of national rejuvenation in the new era.

    Sun Baoguo, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Beijing Technology and Business University, expressed blessing to the 60th anniversary of TUST on behalf of sister universities. He said that profound friendship has grown between him and TUST thanks to many years of cooperation and communication. He hoped that Beijing Technology and Business University and TUST bear in mind the expectation of President Xi Jinping and tap into the development opportunities brought along by strategies of “national rejuvenation through science and education”, “strengthening the country through talents”, and “innovation-driven development”, and join hands to shoulder responsibilities and seek development, in a way to write a new chapter of sincere cooperation and joint development.

    Jia Shiru, a national famous teacher, a candidate of “Ten Thousand Talents Program”, and a professor of Biological Engineering School, looked back his growth story in the alma mater, how he built character and became determined in career choice, and expressed his pride and gratitude as a teacher of TUST. He said that teachers of TUST will continue to carry forward their mission in education, work hard in scientific research, and inherit excellent culture. He hoped that students of TUST be sincere in life choice, cherish youth time, enhance their overall competence, and grow into talents.

    Li Dandan, Chairman of Student Union and a student enrolled in 2015 and majoring in clothing and clothing design of the School of Artistic Design, delivered a speech. She said that the anniversary enabled students to appreciate the history and achievements of TUST and its splendid campus culture in a close range. As a student of TUST, she will respond to the call of the times, carry forward the spirit of her alma mater, follow the footstep of her upperclassmen, and write a new chapter of TUST with youth and wisdom.

    Zhang Chonghe, President of the China National Light Industry Council, said that as one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in light industry, TUST has scored amazing achievements in serving light industry and the state during the past 60 years. He hoped that TUST continue to prioritize the work of nurturing talents with virtue, and remain committed to reform and innovation and serving the society. He hoped TUST, with disciplines in light industry as strength, work to meet state requirements and serve the society, and contribute more to the thriving development of light industry education of China and the realization of Chinese dream, the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

During the past 60 years, TUST has witnessed both vicissitudes and progress. As one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in light industry, TUST has accomplished its mission, and made important contributions to national development and people’s livelihood. In the future, TUST spirit will be carried forward and its people will renew their efforts to forge ahead and strive to build a top-notch, distinctive university of science and technology and contribute to the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

On the festive occasion, alumni associations, schoolfellows, and enterprises of various industries have extended congratulations through congratulatory letter, congratulatory telegram, donation in cash and kind, and other means. Besides the main venue, live broadcasting was offered in Hexi Campus.
